Why I stopped using shower gel…

Last December, when my skin was really bad, my doctor asked me what my daily skincare routine was. As soon as I said shower gel she told me to throw it away. At first I was really taken back…shower gel? How bad can shower gel be? It’s one of those products, like hand soap that you just don’t think about using, it’s just routine. In the shower you wash your hair, condition your hair and then shower gel, right? Well not for me. So I added get that shower gel away from me to my list of things that need to get away from me (bras, flakes of skin, my boyfriends pet tarantula Snowflake) and haven’t looked back.

So shower gel is great, there are loads of different scents and fragrances, foaming ones, minty ones that wake you up and even jelly ones. When you have extremely dry, sensitive and eczema prone skin though, they aren’t so great. Shower gel strips the skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry and without a barrier. I hated the fact that I had been working so hard to keep moisture in to have no idea that I was just drying my skin out further. I was in the viscous cycle and all I was getting out of it was that I smelt like apricot yogurt! Even hypoallergenic shower gels have chemical agents and soaps that can take away natural oils, us dry people just can’t get a break can we?!

I’m not going to lie, at first I HATED not using shower gel. I didn’t feel clean, my skin felt weird and I missed that squeaky clean feeling. I have really got used to it though and haven’t used any gel in 7 months. I don’t even miss it and I just want to confirm I do not smell! As I have said in previous posts, I used Hydromol or Doublebase as a soap substitute now. They don’t lather up, are fragrance free and are more of an in shower moisturiser but they keep my skin clear of eczema and any sensitivity. I now know that my skin felt weird at first because it was actually full of moisture and healthy! Ditching the shower gel has been one of the main factors in my skin getting better and I don’t think I’ll ever go back. Cyyyaaaaaa don’t wanna beeeee yaaaaaaaaaa!
